Elections Systems and Campaign Finance

Reform our election systems to ensure fair elections and full participation. Debra Bowen, California’'s Secretary of State and Ohio Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner, are recipients of the 2008 JFK Profiles in Courage Awards for their courageous work to ensure that voting equipment gives a full and fair count of votes cast in their respective states, in the face of strong objections from many county elections officials. I will support Secretary Bowen's and Ohio Secretary Jennifer Brunner's efforts by backing a national mandate that a verifiable paper trail be a part of every voting system in the country. Support of fair election procedures should no longer be an act of courage in the oldest democracy in the world.

Campaign finance reform. Arizona Clean Elections show what can happen when every state office from the governor on down is fairly publicly financed. The system takes big money out of the election and gives citizens from all walks of life an equal chance to run for public office. I would support a national clean election system that would remove big money from campaigns and return the process to the people.
